Rob Cowan is a figurative and portrait painter who spent 7 fantastic years in the British art school system in the early 90’s graduating with a Post Graduate Diploma in Illustration from Central Saint Martins.

Rob then embarked on a career in illustration and worked with a diverse range of clients globally also creating large scale art works in the public realm. He began his career working in traditional media but in more recent times he combined this with digital media including 2D animation.

During the pandemic and after 25 years Rob decided to leave the world of illustration behind and return to his passion for painting and more specifically figurative painting.

Rob’s practice now centres around the painting of the full figure in bold bright colours and he is fascinated by the concept of delivering paintings that display the full sense of person. Rob want’s the viewer to feel that they maybe know the sitter creating a sense of familiarity. He achieves this by creating paintings that do not only deliver a facial likeness but also take in to account the many other aspects that create a sense of a person, for example clothing and posture.

Rob currently paints on a large scale in acrylics on board and finishes his paintings with a high gloss varnish and bold coloured frames.

As well as constantly working on new series for exhibition Rob is also available for portrait commissions.
